Can Insulin Resistance Affect Depression and Anxiety?

Nicholas Bowen, M.D.

Insulin resistance is most commonly associated with type 2 diabetes, but growing research suggests it may also influence brain health.

Insulin plays an important role in the brain, affecting glucose utilization, neurotransmitter signaling, synaptic plasticity, and cognitive function. When the brain becomes less responsive to insulin, energy metabolism may become less efficient, potentially contributing to fatigue, impaired concentration, and mood symptoms.

Large population studies have found that individuals with obesity, metabolic syndrome, and insulin resistance have higher rates of depression than those with normal metabolic health. While insulin resistance is unlikely to be the sole cause of depression or anxiety, it may represent one contributing factor among many.

Improving metabolic health through nutrition, physical activity, weight management, adequate sleep, and treatment of underlying medical conditions may support both physical and emotional well-being.

Final Thoughts

Mental health and metabolic health are closely connected. Although insulin resistance does not explain every case of depression or anxiety, it is an important piece of the larger picture and an area of active scientific research.
