Inflammation and Depression: What the Research Shows

Depression has traditionally been understood through the lens of neurotransmitters such as serotonin and norepinephrine. More recently, researchers have begun exploring another contributor: chronic, low-grade inflammation.
Inflammation is a normal part of the immune system, but persistent elevation of inflammatory cytokines—including interleukin-6, tumor necrosis factor-alpha, and C-reactive protein—has been associated with depression in some individuals. These inflammatory signals may influence neurotransmitter metabolism, reduce neuroplasticity, alter glutamate signaling, and activate the body’s stress-response systems.
Importantly, depression is not simply an inflammatory disorder, and inflammation is unlikely to explain every patient’s symptoms. Rather, it appears to be one biological pathway that may contribute to depression in susceptible individuals.
As research advances, scientists continue to investigate whether identifying inflammatory subtypes of depression could eventually lead to more personalized treatments.
