Getting Started
Preparing for Your First Appointment
Nicholas Bowen, M.D.
You don’t need to prepare extensively for your first psychiatric appointment, but a little preparation can make the conversation more productive.
Before your visit, consider writing down your primary concerns and symptoms, when your symptoms began, previous psychiatric medications or therapy, current medications and medical conditions, family history of mental illness, questions you’d like to discuss, and your goals for treatment.
If you’ve received previous psychiatric care, bringing records can also be helpful, though they are not always necessary.
Most importantly, come prepared to be honest. There are no “right” or “wrong” answers, and the more openly we can discuss your experiences, the better we can understand what is contributing to your symptoms.
Final Thoughts
You don’t need to have everything figured out before your appointment. That’s what the evaluation is for.
