The Science of Neuroplasticity and Depression

The adult brain is constantly changing.
This ability, known as neuroplasticity, allows neurons to strengthen existing connections, form new synapses, and adapt in response to learning and experience.
Depression appears to reduce this flexibility. Chronic stress and elevated cortisol levels can decrease brain-derived neurotrophic factor, impair synaptic connections within the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus, and reduce the brain’s ability to adapt.
Many antidepressant treatments—including exercise, psychotherapy, antidepressant medications, and ketamine—appear to improve depression in part by promoting neuroplasticity.
Rather than simply correcting a “chemical imbalance,” modern psychiatry increasingly recognizes that successful treatment may involve helping the brain rebuild healthier neural networks.
