Getting Started
What to Expect During Your First Psychiatric Evaluation
Nicholas Bowen, M.D.
For many people, the first psychiatric appointment is the most intimidating simply because it is unfamiliar. In reality, it is best thought of as a conversation—not an interrogation.
During the evaluation, we’ll discuss your current concerns, medical and psychiatric history, previous treatments, medications, sleep, lifestyle, family history, and your goals for treatment. Depending on your situation, we may also discuss work, relationships, substance use, or other factors that may be affecting your mental health.
The purpose of the evaluation is not simply to assign a diagnosis or prescribe medication. It is to understand the broader picture and develop an individualized treatment plan based on your unique circumstances.
You’ll also have plenty of time to ask questions. Good psychiatric care is collaborative, and decisions are made together—not for you.
Final Thoughts
The first appointment is the foundation for everything that follows. The more complete the understanding, the more personalized and effective treatment can become.
